A heat pump is an energy-efficient means of providing heating and cooling. It uses a reversible heat transfer cycle that allows the condenser and evaporator to serve dual purposes. Heat pumps are most efficient in moderate climates where heating and cooling loads are almost equal. In freezing temperatures, a heat pump requires an electric resistance heater to keep the outdoor coils from freezing.
